What is Vinyl Chloride?
A substance that is used to make common products is vinyl chloride. It has been in our environment and surroundings for many years. Recently it was discovered by the government and society how much damage it causes to people and their health.
Vinyl chloride is an organic compound that is a colorless, sweet scented gas when stored at room temperatures. At high temperatures, this chemical used in industrial areas, is highly unbalanced and burns easily.
Not occurring naturally, this substance is manufactured. It can be produced when substances such as trichloroethane, trichloroethylene, and tetrachloroethylene are broken down.
During the manufacturing process, these industries used vinyl chloride:
*Building and construction
*Businesses related to automotives
*Industrial supplies and supplies for the home
*Rubber, paper, and glass businesses
To produce plastic products, polyvinyl chloride is used. Packaging materials, pipes, wire coating and cable coating are just some examples that contain PVC. During the 1950s and 60s, hairsprays and spray paints contained vinyl chloride and until 1974, aerosol spray propellants contained vinyl chloride.
The U.S. Environmental Agency, in 1999, found vinyl chloride 100 times the amount allowed by law in Mossville, Louisiana. Vinyl chloride is commonly found in the atmosphere where processing plants, landfills, and harmful waste sites are located.
Hairstylists used hairspray as a part of their job. In the past, these bottles contained vinyl chloride and many stylists have been exposed to a large amount of it. Aerosol sprays had larger amounts of vinyl chloride and workers who made these were exposed with higher dosages.
Breathing high levels of vinyl chloride will increase the chance of developing cancers of the liver, lung or brain and cancers of the blood. Studies have shown people working with vinyl chloride were more likely to develop one of these conditions.
The vascular toxin, vinyl chloride, can cause angiosarcoma, a quickly growing tumor. Exposure to vinyl chloride can affect the liver. When vinyl chloride reaches the liver, the substance of the liver changes. Traveling slower than vinyl chloride, the new substances go through your blood and through the kidneys. It leaves through your urine. These substances are more armful than vinyl chloride because it responds to the natural chemicals in the body. By doing this, it interrupts how your body would normally react.
Blood flow of the hands is affected from being exposed to vinyl chloride. Usually this is followed by other problems. Exposure to vinyl chloride can cause acroosteolysis, weakening of the bone. You will experience numbness of your fingertips, then ulcers, finally with the bone loss you will have disfigurement.
When making polyvinyl chloride there is dioxins that are released. Contact of vinyl chloride though the air is primarily how you can be exposed. However, with exposure to the eyes or skin, you could be at risk. These dioxins can cause cancers and other problems with your immune system and reproductive system. The closer a person lives to a PVC area, the higher level of dioxins was found.
